Malaga West - La Cala de Mijas

La Cala de Mijas, province of Malaga, Andalusia, southern Spain, located in the middle between Malaga and Marbella, at 35km distance of each, consist of three subbregions:

  • La Cala
  • Mijas Pueblo
  • Mijas Costa

La cala

La Cala with its 1,6km dark sand beach with here and there occasionally some rocks, is a reccurrent winner of the blue recognition ( International quality label for sustainable tourism and recreation).

  • Playa de Roccoso is a tiny peaceful beach nearby a cliff at La Cala and Calahonda borders.The Playa de Calahonda is a 4,5km golden sand beach between the marina of Cabopino and the  beach of El Bombo.

Playa de Calahonda also has a blue flag.More inland, the beautiful La Cala Hotel Resort and La Cala Golf & Country Resort area between the Mediterranean Sea and the Mijas nature reserve of approximately 2000 hectares. The golf club has three golf courses,

  • Campo Europa
  • Campo Asia
  • Campo America

Due to the phenomenal view at Mijas Pueblo and the nature reserve, several residential complexes were built between the golf area. At sunset a golden glow covers the mountain range of the Sierra de Mijas.

Mijas Pueblo

Perched on a slope of the Sierra de Mijas mountain range, at a altitude of 430m, Michas Pueblo is one of the white villages in Andalusia. The atmospheric and authentic mountain village with its narrow winding streets, white houses and a number of historic buildings, has shops with local products, some restaurants and hotels and beautiful views of the natural surrounding and the Mediterranean Sea. 

  •  Mijas Pueblo is the place to be for hiking the Sierra de Mijas mountains.
  • Or relaxing at the coast nearby.

Mijas Costa

Mijas Costa with its 12 km wide coastline at the Costa del Sol is located in between Fuengirola and Marbella. 

  • The municipality of Las Lagunas is relatively new and build gradually between 1975 and 2005. 
  • On the Mijas Costa are golf courses, bars and restaurants.

Mijas Pueblo

Mijas Pueblo, one of the white villages of Andalusia, is known for the burro-taxi, a donkey coach, the animals dressed in bright fabric, will take you for a ride at the narrow streets of this rather touristy but interesting destination. Despite the high tourist content, one gets an impression of what life must have looked like, decades ago. The souvenir shops offer braided baskets, pottery, artisanal soaps and leather accessories.

History

At the Roman occupation the townwas known as 'Tamisa' The Romans maintained a mively trade with this city which was on the "Va APia", a road connecting Malaga with Cadiz. Later in history, the Moors renamed Tamisa into Mixa and the Christians eventually called it 'Mijas'.

Mijas Pueblo is a beatiful combination of a Spanish village with Arabic influences and contemporary charming adaptations with picturesque courtyards, gardens,restaurants....The white houses are vividly in contrast with the green of nature surrounding it.

Beaches of La Cala de Mijas

The smal town of La Cala de Mijas is the administrative center of the Mijas Costa. Once a fishing village, La Cala has grown into a popular holiday destination, wth a population of around 4000, schools, medical centers, a range of shops and restaurants and the best beaches on the Costa del Sol. For many it is a destination for relaxing beach holiday.

There are 15 beaches, 3 of which have blue flag status. The 12km coastline is divided into larger and smaller beaches. Some of the small beaches are the most peaceful at the Costa del SOl. Bridges and tunnels were provided for pedestrians to easily reach the beach. 

  • Mijas' huge efforts for its maintenance of the beaches is currentely rewarded; the international blue flag is an indication of the high value of sand and water hygiene.
  • The beach of La Cala is 35m wide and 2 km long and accessible to the disabled.There are sun beds and umbrellas for rent, water sport can be practiced and the chiringuitos (beach bars) provide snacks and drinks.
  • Due to the sufficient public toilets and showers and the lifeguards during the summer period, this area is ideal for families with children or for mor active tourists.
  • On the boulevard next to the beach one can enter the bars for a delicious refreshment.
  • Another beach at Mijas is playa de Calahonda. A25m narrow strip, but with its 4,5km width it is the cities' longest one. It became the blue flag award for hygiene. Of course sunbeds and umbrellas are available here as well. This beach is also accessible from exit 200 of the A7, Calahonda.

Wherever you go at Mijas, it is recommended not to forget your suntan lotion!
